November 5 Celebration of Saints

November 5 Celebration of Saints

Saints Zachary and Elizabeth

Zachary and Elizabeth were a married couple who lived in Jerusalem. Zachary was a priest and Elizabeth was a cousin of the Virgin Mary.

At a time when Elizabeth was beyond child-bearing age, Zachary was visited by an angel who told him they would have a son and should name him John. As he heard the angel speak he had doubts, so the angel made Zachary unable to speak.

Mary came to visit Elizabeth and spoke the hymn of praise now known as Magnificat.

Elizabeth had a son and they named him John. After the birth of John, Zachary’s voice was restored.

The story of Zachary and Elizabeth is told in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke, in the New Testament.
