Saint Sabbas the Sanctified (439–532)
This is the primary and most widely celebrated saint commemorated on December 5 in the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Eastern Catholic traditions.
Saint Sabbas was a revered monk and ascetic in the Judean desert. He founded the famous Mar Saba Monastery, one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world.
Sabbas was a major spiritual father of Eastern monasticism who was known for profound prayer, discipline, and leadership during theological disputes of his time.
Saint Anastasius of Brescia
Saint Anastasius was the Bishop of Brescia (Italy) in the 7th century. He served during a time of political and social instability, and was known for pastoral care, charity, and defending the faith.
Saint Felix of Nola (Martyr)
Saint Felix is not universally observed on this date, but he appears in several older martyrologies. He was martyred during Roman persecutions and is venerated especially in parts of Italy.
Saint John Almond (1577–1612)
John Almond was an English priest and martyr who served during the reign of Elizabeth I and James I. He was executed for remaining loyal to the Catholic faith.
Saint John Almond was beatified for his courage and steadfastness in persecution.
Blessed Niels Stensen (Nicolas Steno)
His official feast day is November 25, but he appears in some local calendars on December 5.
Blessed Niels Stensen was a convert from Lutheranism to Catholicism. He was a bishop and brilliant scientist who was a pioneer in anatomy and geology (“known as the father of stratigraphy”).
His life serves as a model of integrating science and faith.
