Saint Ambrose of Milan (c. 340–397)
Doctor of the Church | Bishop | Defender of the Faith
Patron of: beekeepers, candle makers, learning, Milan, and students.
One of the greatest bishops of the early Church, Saint Ambrose was unexpectedly acclaimed bishop of Milan while still a catechumen.
Known for his brilliant preaching, firm defense of orthodoxy against Arianism, and deep spiritual influence, he played a crucial role in converting Saint Augustine. Ambrose’s writings shaped Western theology, liturgy, and church-state relations for centuries.
He is remembered for his courage in confronting Emperor Theodosius, insisting that even rulers must submit to moral law. His feast celebrates a bishop whose wisdom, humility, and conviction still resonate today.
Saint Agatho the Wonderworker (4th century)
Early Christian ascetic noted for miracles and deep humility.
Patronage: not formally assigned but invoked for spiritual discernment and protection.
Saint Agatho lived as a monk in the Egyptian desert, where his gentleness and humility became legendary. Numerous striking miracles were attributed to him, yet he remained deeply self-effacing. When asked if he was a holy man, he once replied: “I am not a monk, nor am I anything good.” His life reflects the profound virtue of humility in the spiritual path.
