November 24 Celebration of Saints

November 24 Celebration of Saints

Saint Andrew Dung Lac

Saint Andrew Dung Lac was born in Vietnam with the name Trần An Dũng in 1795. When he was baptized a Christian, he took the name Andrew.

During times when it was very dangerous to be a Christian in Vietnam, Andrew became a Catholic priest in March of 1823, at the age of 27.  This made him an enemy to the government regime.

While in hiding, he changed his name to Lac to help evade being captured, so he is remembered with that surname.

Andrew Dung Lac was eventually captured and was martyred by beheading on December 21, 1839.

He was beatified on November 24, 1900 by Pope Leo XIII and canonized a saint on June 19, 1988 by Pope John Paul II.

All Vietnamese Martyrs

November 24 is the day to remember all Vietnamese Christians who were executed for their faith during various anti-Christian government regimes from 1625 to 1886. They gave their lives valiantly in the name of their faith while spreading the word of Christianity in that region
