November 30 Celebration of Saints

Saint Andrew the Apostle

Saint Andrew was born sometime between the years 5 and 10 AD in Bethsaida, Galilee. He was an apostle of Jesus and brother to the Apostle Peter.

Andrew and Peter were fishermen who were called by Jesus to be his disciples and “fishers of men.”

Andrew was one of the disciples closest to Jesus and was present with Christ on many occasions, including the Last Supper.

After the resurrection of Christ, Andrew preached the gospel in the regions now known as Ukraine, Romania and Russia.

He was crucified in the year 62 in the city of Patras, Archaea by being bound to an X-shaped cross.

Andrew is considered to be the patriarch of Constantinople, which today is in the region of Istanbul, Turkey.

The attributes of Andrew’s image often depict him as an old man with a beard and long white hair, holding a book or scroll, on an X-shaped cross (saltire), and with a fishing net.

Andrew is the patron saint of farm workers, miners, singers, fishermen, fishmongers, butchers, textile workers and pregnant women.
