October 10 Celebration of Saints
Saint Angela Truszkowska
Saint Angela Truszkowska was born Sophia Camille Truszkowska on May 16, 1825 in Kalisz, Poland. She initially joined the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul as a layperson who ministered to orphans and homeless people living on the streets.
She then joined the Third Order of Saint Francis and took the name Angela. In 1855 she rented a small house for elderly women and orphaned girls who had been living on the streets. It was known as the “Institute of Miss Truszkowska.”
Mother Angela then totally consecrated herself to God and formed a community dedicated to the ideals of Saint Francis of Assisi, the “Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix of Cantalice.” She withdrew from service in 1869 at age 44, due to deafness.
Angela died on October 10, 1898 in Krakow, Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. She was beatified on April 18, 1993 by Pope John Paul II.
Saint Angela Truszkowska is remembered for her piety and compassion for the underprivileged.
