Saint Callixtus I
Pope Callixtus I was the Bishop of Rome from 218 to his death in 223. He was martyred for his Christian faith.
At one point in his life, Callixtus was sentenced to work in the mines of Sardinia. It so weakened his health that he received a pension from Pope Victor I.
Callixtus became a deacon in 199 and was appointed by Pope Zephyrinus to oversee the Christian burial ground on the Appian Way (currently known as the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus). Many early popes were buried in the cemetery, which was the first land owned by the Church.
Pope Zephyrinus died on December 20, 217 and Callixtus would become the next bishop of Rome. Callixtus is known for expanding the absolution of sins to include sexual transgressions and mortal sins, such as murder.
However, due to this and other differences he had with Callixtus, Hippolytus was elected as another bishop of Rome – the first “antipope.”
Callixtus was martyred in 223 for his Christian faith. He was buried in a cemetery on the Appian Way, and in the 9th century his relics were moved to Santa Maria in Trastevere.
