Saint Ignatius of Antioch Martyr
Saint Ignatius of Antioch was born in 35 AD in the Roman Empire’s province of Syria. He was a disciple of Saint John the Apostle. He authored many writings but almost nothing is known about his personal life.
Ignatius succeeded Evodius as the bishop of Antioch and took the religious name Theophorus, which means “bearer of God.”
Ignatius was martyred in Rome in 108 AD. He was canonized a saint by John the Apostle. The attributes of his image are a bishop surrounded by lions or in chains. He is patron saint of the Church in the eastern Mediterranean and North Africa.
