Saint Paul of the Cross
Saint Paul of the Cross was born Paolo Francesco Daneii on January 3, 1694 in Ovada, Italy. He was an Italian priest who is known for his dedication to the Passion of Christ and forming the community of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, also known as The Passionists.
Paul and his brother John Baptist preached in remote parishes in Italy, where he became well known for his generosity and grace.
The Passionists started their first Retreat (monastery) in 1737 on Monte Argentario. Its nine members lived in solitude and spent hours in contemplative prayer each day.
John of the Cross died at age 85 on October 18, 1775 at the Retreat of Saints John and Paul in Rome.
He was beatified by Pope Pius IX on October 1, 1852, and canonized a saint on June 29, 1867 by Pius IX.
