Saint Pope Boniface I
Pope Boniface I was born in Rome, though his birthdate is not known.
He was ordained by Pope Damasus I and rose through the ranks of the Church to become a bishop and a councilor of Pope Innocent. He lived at the same time as Saint Augustine of Hippo.
In the year 419, after the death of Pope Zosimus there was some dispute whether Bishop Boniface or Bishop Eulalius had been elected as the Bishop of Rome to succeed Zosimus. But on April 3, 419, Emperor Honorius recognized Boniface as Pope.
As Pope, Boniface I is known for maintaining discipline in the Church and defending the Holy See. In addition to making changes to church services, he made changes within the church hierarchy and jurisdictions, and ordered that the Bishop of Valence (Maximus) be tried by a synod for his alleged crimes.
Saint Boniface I served as Pope until his death on September 4, 422.
