Saint Frumentius
Saint Frumentius, the Apostle of Ethiopia
Saint Frumentius, also known as Abuna (Our Father) and Aba Salama, was born early in the fourth century in Tyre, Eastern Roman Empire (now Lebanon).
He and his brother were kidnapped as children and became slaves of the King of Axum. The King freed them before his death, and they began to preach in the region.
Frumentius traveled to Alexandria, Egypt to request that missionaries be sent to Axum and a bishop appointed in Axum.
As a result, the Bishop of Alexandria appointed Frumentius as the first bishop of Axum. Frumentius then established the Church in Ethiopia, where he converted many souls, including the King of Axum.
Among other accomplishments, Frumentius is credited with translating the first translation of the New Testament into the local language of Ge’ez.
Saint Frumentius died in 383 in the Kingdom of Axum.
