October 29 Celebration of Saints

Saint Narcissus

Narcissus of Jerusalem was a patriarch and the 30th Bishop of Jerusalem born in the year 99 AD. He was known for praying often and encouraging unity and peace among his flock.

In 195 AD Nacissus presided over a council that determined Easter would be changed from being observed on Passover to always be celebrated on a Sunday.

He is credited with several miracles, including once turning water into oil for the oil lamps at the vigil of Easter. After unjustly being accused of serious religious violations he was found innocent and he decided to leave Jerusalem to live as a hermit for several years.

When he returned to Jerusalem he was asked to resume his position in the church, which he did with the assistance of Saint Alexander.

Saint Narcissus died in Jerusalem in 216 AD. He was declared a saint by pre-congregation and his attributes include a bishop holding a blossoming thistle, a pitcher of water near his image and an angel lifting his soul to heaven.
